Critical Legislative Update

Yesterday (7/1/25), the Senate budget reconciliation bill, the “One Big Beautiful Bill” (H.R. 1), passed 51-50. This bill includes the largest cuts to health insurance coverage due to federal policy changes in American history.

The "One Big Beautiful Bill" (H.R. 1) now goes back to the House, where Representatives will review changes made in the Senate version and take up a final vote.

We expect the vote to take place before the Fourth of July holiday and need your help to contact your Representative to urge them to vote “No” on this bill to protect Medicaid, SNAP and pediatric care services.

Why does this Matter for Children in Illinois?

  • Medicaid is the primary source of comprehensive health care and long-term coverage to more than 3.4 million Illinoisans (1 in 4 Illinoisans) and nearly 800,000 Illinois residents covered by the ACA are at risk of losing their health care coverage if federal funding is reduced.
  • Nearly 1.49 million Illinois children have coverage through Medicaid, or slightly under half of all Illinoisans enrolled in Medicaid.
  • Medicaid funding is vital, and this bill will have an immediate and devastating impact on pediatric patients and their families.
  • The attached file "2025 Medicaid Cuts Impact IL Programs for Children and Families" outlines the programs and services that will be significantly impacted by proposed Medicaid cuts.

Calling Resources

You can call Congress at 866-426-2631 or your representative's office directly and tell them Medicaid cuts should be off the table. Thank them for the call and encourage your friends and colleagues to do the same. The lines may be busy, so you might speak with one of their staff members or leave a voicemail – both are important since staff must track phone calls from constituents.

Advocacy Tip

Make it personal. Your experience is your expertise, and NAPNAP members are experts in pediatrics and advocates for children! Think about why Medicaid is important to you, your patients, and the community you live and/or work in. You can make a significant difference in securing the resources necessary to continue our vital work caring for children in Illinois.
