Representatives Lois Capps (D-CA) and Dave Joyce (R-OH) introduced the "Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act" (H.R. 2713) June 10. This critical legislation would extend the authorization of federal funding for nursing education programs under Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act through fiscal year 2020. This funding includes the Advanced Education Nursing Program - the only source of federal funding for pediatric nurse practitioner education - and the Nurse Faculty Loan Program. Similar legislation is expected to be introduced in the Senate in the coming weeks.
It is critically important that Congress demonstrate strong bipartisan support for reauthorizing these education programs - the current funding authorization will expire at the end of September unless Congress takes action.
